For those of you who would like a breath of fresh air in your music life, stop holding your breath! I might have the band for you. Son Volt was a part of the semi popular alternative country group Uncle Tupelo. In 1993 when Jay Farrar, Mike Heidorn, and brothers Jim and Dave Boquist (Farrar on vocals, Jim playing the bass and Dave strumming the guitar, steel guitar, banjo, and fiddle) completed the group and signed with Warner Bros. It was 1995 when their debut album, Trace, got released; many critiques were exceptionally positive, stating that it was “offering a stark, subtle, mostly downbeat sings that grew from country, folk, and roots rock”.

With new members Dave Bryson (drummer), bassist Andrew Duplantis, and seven albums released (their most recent, American Central Dust) out, Son Volt has been traveling the northwest from Washington to California…their next stop? The Domino Room in Bend. Although it will be hosted on a Monday evening, this will be a unique show for those music lovers looking for something new and different. Tickets can be purchased at the local record store Ranch Records for $18 in advance or $20 at the door, which opens at 7PM. Also, don’t forget to catch the opening artists Sera Cahoone at 8:00! And now you can exhale with diverse musical satisfaction.

Football. Is it a bunch of sweaty boys throwing a ball around on a field? Or could it possibly be one of the most exciting things you will ever watch?

It was one of the best football games I had ever been to in my life. It was no longer a game; it was a suspenseful thrill ride with too many twists and turns to count. Blood, sweat and tears were definitely shed many a time during this compelling two and a half hours. This… was the Civil War.

The stands were packed with anxious Lava Bear fans awaiting first kickoff. Lava Bears greatly outnumbered the Cougars in fans who had come to watch the game. The cheerleaders were breaking out in every cheer they knew, getting the people who were packing into the stands at the last minute fired up for this riveting game. The concessions stand was obviously going to make a lot of money that night; everywhere you turned, someone was eating a hot dog, some form of candy, or drinking some sort of bottled drink. It was moderately cold outside, not freezing, but just cold enough to make everyone wear a jacket.

The school band started to play the fight song. The people in “the box”, including Bob Shaw and other various people, were now introducing the teams. Here it was. This was the moment we were all waiting for. First kickoff.

The game started out moderately slow for the Bears, they slid a few points behind at some times… hence the term too many twists and turns to count. The game was a huge rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. The Bears made their way ahead, and then the Cougars took the lead. Then the Bears raced ahead, with the Cougars following not too far behind. The game was very intense, every person’s eyes glued to the field to witness this amazing spectacle.

The team… the fans… everyone was eager to see how this amazing game would end. If the Cougars will get another win, or if the Bears, fighting hard, will take the Cougars and finally break their would-be four year straight winning record over the Bears in the Civil War. It was getting nerve racking. A few minutes left in the fourth quarter and the teams are tied neck and neck at 21. Then an amazing thing happened… the Bears made a touchdown!

Another six points plus one more for the field goal, that brought the Bears just that much closer to winning! Sealing the deal on this long-awaited win… the last few minutes of the game passed with no changes. The Bears finish the game with high spirits and excitement; taking the Cougars 28-21!

Their enthusiasm and determination finally paid off and brought this miraculous and honorable win to the world of Bend High Football!

Growing up in the “first-class ghetto” of Kingston, Jamaica, Ripton Joseph Hilton brought a new and creative name to Trench Town in 1919 when he gave up on horse betting and made music his full time career. Though under the genre of Reggae, Eek-A-Mouse does not exactly fit just Reggae. Bringing his own style to reggae, rock and hip-hop, Hilton burst out in 1979 with his first hit single “Once a Virgin” and then made 10+ more albums throughout the years of 1981-2006. For those Reggae heads of you out there, or maybe you even like the idea of world music, Eek-A-Mouse brings a breath of fresh air to the music industry with his own scat-reggae style. (To hear his music, follow this link: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=7614848)

Coming to Bend on the night of November 18th, the musician will bring a different spice to locals’ diverse musical offerings at the Domino Room.

Now that you’re surely interested…. tickets can be purchased at Ranch Records downtown for $18 in advance or $20 if you pay at the door. Check out the show, maybe broaden your music taste, and come prepared for some of the worlds’ most creative reggae.

“Daydreams” got us wondering if Fantasy is better than Reality?
Well, wake up modern-day teenager you have to get your head screwed on straight! If you think passing everyday life for a storybook fairytale is going to cut it in the real world… it isn’t. Maybe having Mr./ Mrs. Right just magically pop in one day and you have this wonderful romance and just happen to ride off into the sunset… think again. But if that’s how you planned out your whole life I’m not judging you because sometimes it’s better to think like that, to ignore all the negative effects in the world. So is it better? If it isn’t, get that silly head of yours out of the clouds! How you may ask? Just plan on being yourself and people will like you for who you are.

The Lady Bears of Water Polo are playing hotter than lava this season! In one week, they have faced a double threat: both the Corvallis Spartans, and our old rival, the Summit Storm. Corvallis had only five players, so their game was forfeited. Throughout the entire game, the score was at a tie, and the end of the game saw a final score of Bend: 5; Corvallis: 5. Halfway through the second Quarter, Corvallis’s #8 player was forced to retire from the game after receiving a blow to the eye during a particularly rough struggle for the ball. The number of players was then reduced to four on four. It was an eventful night.

However, it seems that every night can be topped by another. The game of October 20th was one to remember, although perhaps in not such a pleasant light. When one of the Summit players, whose name will not be disclosed, pulled a rather fierce blow to a Lava Bear girl, the Bend player then responded in an equally angry manner, upon which the Bend player was asked to leave the game. Later, another wrangle sparked between two other players. Bend finished with a victory of 12-5.

It’s obvious that as the tantalizing prospect of State draws nearer, the rivalries are getting hotter by the minute. The grand finale for this season is approaching, and now, every game counts!

“Move it!” that’s the sound of Bend High students pushing and shoving people out of the way. Well, maybe I am one of those people and maybe I’m not, but still, like everyone else, I want to get to class on time whether it’s to study or just have five minutes of talking time with my friends. So be aware if you want to get a face full of floor, wall, locker, or some stranger’s backside by someone who pushed you out of the way to get to class “Move It!”

If it’s a pop or a lock, a spin into a leap, the Bend High Dance Team girls have it down. Starting out with only a few members, the team has now turned into nineteen dancers. There are nine seniors, two juniors, four sophomores, and four freshmen. Kelli Bailey is the head coach, Rebekah Hopkins is the assistant coach, and P.R. Love, a previous dance team captain, comes to help out. When the dance team first began a few years ago, they were not well known because the idea was new. Now, many students in the school acknowledge our Bend High dance girls.

Each week the group practices on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays for two and a half hours. First, they start out with a warm up to stretch their muscles. Then, head coach, Kelli Bailey, sometimes has them work on technique by doing drills across the gym floor. From there the girls either learn a new dance or practice an old one. The team learns many dances to perform throughout the school year. Our dance team performs at assemblies, games, and even dance competitions.

Last year, the dance team had the chance to perform at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego. The Holiday Bowl is a televised championship football game played between two different college teams. That year, U of O and Oklahoma Sate played each other. This was a huge opportunity for the Bend High dance team because the stadium housed 59,106 screaming fans. “Welcome to the Jungle” was the song they danced to during halftime. With sunglasses and cute expressions while dancing, they brought entertainment to a filled stadium.

This year, our girls are competing in Portland on November 7th. They’re performing a flamenco dance. Flamenco is a type of Spanish dance that involves sharp profound movements. Wearing flowing skirts and high-heeled character shoes, these chicas will flaunt their sassy flamenco style. Wish them luck!
